Recognition of Prior Learning

Lateral transfer is possible for students of master's and doctorate programmes who have successfully completed at least one semester at another department of the same university and the same institute, or at a master's and doctorate programme of another equivalent institute of another higher education institute. According to the related bylaws, the courses that a lateral transfer student should take within the scope of 'Programme Adjustment' are determined by the committee of the relevant department. The determination of which and how many of the previously taken courses should be recognized within scope of the minimum course load, is suggested by the advisor and the committee of the relevant department,as well. "Full Recognition" is provided upon the approval of those courses by the board of chairs of relevant institute.

Kocaeli University guarantees in advance that all credits gained and courses received by an Erasmus student after the mobility abroad will be fully recognized and transferred into Kocaeli University system and upon arrival with the approval of the authorities and the student. While preparing the" Erasmus Credit Transfer and Grade Equivalency Table" the ECTS grades are transmitted to Kocaeli University grading system.

Turkish higher education institutions are in the start-up phase about the recognition of informal and non formal education. However; computer and foreign language skills that students improve on their own, are evaluated through exemption examinations by the university. Students who prove to be proficient in such exams are exempted from related course(s).

Program Competencies

  • Individual has a basic knowledge on abiotic and biotic disease agents, mycorrhizae, pests and weeds, and benefical organisms and microorganisms and their taxonomy
  • Review and evaluate national and international literature about interested field.
  • Determines the problems which can be research subject in related specific field.
  • Develops research proposal based on literature review.
  • Individual has a basic knowledge on basic sciences such as ecology, botany , zoology, genetics, economy related to plant protection
  • Individual has a basic knowledge on control methods of plant diseases (Fungal, bacterial and viral), pests (insects, mites, , nematodes and rodents)and weeds
  • Uses individual and team work skills in national and international projects
  • Reviews literature about research subject and plans research design.
  • Collects data with related research issue
  • Has a basic knowledge on the harmful effects of pesticides on human, environment and non- target organisms
  • Can use higher-order thinking skills (e.g. critical thinking, problem solving, creative thinking, decision making, reflection)
  • Identifies the problems about plant protection applications and produces solutions
  • Organizes and analyzes the data collected for research purposes
  • Uses scientific research skills in his studies
  • Uses communication skills effectively
  • Obeys the ethical rules
  • Interprets, organizes and presents the findings
  • Gains the ability to produce sustainable, environmental and economic solutions to disease, pest and weed problems
  • Carries out the production, design and development of new products to be used in the fight against diseases, pests and foreign diseases in integration with different branches of science
  • Turns and defends research into reports
  • Makes theoretical and practical applications that will minimize the disadvantages such as residues, tolerance, resistance that may occur during pesticide use.
  • Can conduct research and experiments on diseases, pests and weeds
  • Can manage laboratories associated with Plant Protection
  • Monitors and interprets the latest professional and technological developments related to the own field
  • Publishes research results related to the latest developments in the field
  • Can provide consultancy and expert opinion on pests, diseases and weeds and their struggles in agricultural production areas and enterprises
  • Monitors the latest developments in agriculture, gains the ability to solve plant protection problems, can develop new ideas and methods
  • Conducts written and oral communication on Plant Protection at national and international level. It can inform and direct manufacturers and relevant institutions when necessary
  • Gains the responsibility and self-confidence to communicate directly and through the press about informing and educating different segments of society in the field of Plant Protection
  • Acquires the ability to evaluate the relationship between agricultural struggle and food security with the dimensions of producer, consumer and environment and to share it with the whole society
  • Can be a consultant, project manager, trainer on agriculture-related issues, produce solutions, advise relevant people and institutions
