Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Classify ceramic materials according to their structure and usage fields.
2) Distinguish ceramic raw materials and make required analysis of ceramic raw materials.
3) Distinguish glass raw materials.
4) Determine drying shrinkage, firing shrinkage and total shrinkage of ceramic bodies and make a mould water analysis and moisture analysis.
5) Distinguish glass according to their structure and usage fields and make stained glass.
6) Shape ceramic with different methods.
7) Prepare plaster mould and slip
8) Determine glass defects, corrode and cover glass

Course Contents

Definitions of technology, ceramic and glass, classification of ceramics as a structural and uses of ceramics, ceramic and glass raw materials and their properties, drying, firing and total shrinkage, analysis of molding water, water absorption and moisture, classification of glass as a structural and uses of glass, stained glass technique, ceramic shaping methods, plaster mould and its properties, glass defects, glass surface coatings.

Weekly Schedule

1) Description of technology and ceramic, classification of ceramic materials and usage fields, introduction to ceramic raw materials, clay and kaolen groups raw materials
2) Differences between clays and kaolens, quartz and feldspar group raw materials and their properties, tests applied to raw materials
3) Description of glass and structure of it, introduction to glass raw materials and oxides
4) Properties of glass raw materials and oxides, sources of raw materials, glass pigments and their properties, transport and storage of raw materials
5) To teach drying shrinkage, firing shrinkage and total shrinkage calculations as theoretically and practical
6) To teach water of mould, moisture analysis and water absorption as theoretically and practical
7) Glass types and their properties acording to their structures and usage field.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Glass used at the architecture and their properties, stained glass technique (leaded, with copper, joining)
10) Batch preperation, introduction to ceramic shaping methods, plastic forming methods, shaping with lathe, method of dry pressing
11) Method, species and properties of slip casting, slip preperation, preperation pf plaster mould, properties of plaster
12) Preperation of slip at the labaratory
13) Glass defects and crack formation, etching of glass surface, glass surface coatings
14) General all over
