Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Students will be able to analyze the relation between gender and literature.
2) Students will learn the theoretical approaches about gender roles in literature, femininity, masculinity, gender of authorship, gender of reader and feminist literary theory.
3) Students will be able to discuss gender in the late Ottoman period through the perspective of Ottoman authors like Namık Kemal, Şemseddin Sami and Ottoman female intellectuals and in modernized Turkey through the authors like Suad Derviş, Halide Edip, Yusuf Atılgan, Sevgi Soysal, Sevim Burak, Leyla Erbil, Cihan Aktaş is discussed.

Course Contents

This course focuses on the representation of gender in literature. In this respect, the theoretical approaches about gender roles in literature, femininity, masculinity, gender of authorship, gender of reader and feminist literary theory are explained through texts in Turkish literature. Starting from the 19th century texts in Modern Turkish literature are read. The language and content of male literature is studied by feminist approaches, the originality and the methods of deconstruction of dominant male perspective in literature created by female authors are analyzed. Gender in the late Ottoman period through the perspective of Ottoman authors like Namık Kemal, Şemseddin Sami and Ottoman female intellectuals and in modernized Turkey through the authors like Suad Derviş, Halide Edip, Yusuf Atılgan, Sevgi Soysal, Sevim Burak, Leyla Erbil, Cihan Aktaş is discussed.
