Course Contents

The historical geography of the Classical Period since the Late Archaic Period Sculptors and their works of Transition Period and the Classical Period Monuments of the Classical Period Classical architectural sculpture Tombs and steles of Classical Period Classical sculpture workshops and schools.

2) Art in general in the Classical Period.
3) The social and political events in Athens during the classical period.
4) The art of Sculpture in the Classical perion in the light of epigrafical documents and ancient authors.
5) Pausanias and Strabo.
6) Sculptors of the early Classical Period: Kritios and Nesiotes.
7) Reliefs of the Early Classical Period: Mourning Athena, The Ludovisi throne.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) The temple of Olympian Zeus and the cult statue.
10) The time of Pericles in Athens
11) Sculptors Myron and Polyklet. The Canon system in statuary.
12) The sculptor Phedias and his works.
13) The temple of Athena Parthenos, its cult statue, temple and frieze sculptures.
14) Terracotta statuettes and stalai of the Classical Period.
15) Final Exam
