Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Determine Eastern Mediterranean, Anatolian and Near Eastern cultures in the 2nd millennium BC
2) Classify the raw and industrial material wandering around the Eastern Mediterranean and its vicinity
3) Explain the distribution of the raw material from Egypt, Northern Africa, Levant, Northern Europe and Central Asia within the Ancient Near East
4) Assess the maritime trade routes within Eastern Mediterranean during the late bronze age and their interaction with the Assyrian trade colonies and the Hittite Empire
5) Assess the interactions of the 2nd millennium BC Eastern Anatolian-Caucasian Cultures with the Assyrian Trade Colonies and the Hittite Empire in the 2nd millennium BC.

Course Contents

In this course Western Anatolia-Marmara region, Cilicia , Southeastern Anatolia and eastern Anatolia in the 2nd Millennium BC as well as the late bronze age ship wreckes, the cultural interactions and trade relations in these regions with each other and with Egypt, Cyprus will be analyzed.

Weekly Schedule

1) The geographical and chronological attitude of the neighbouring cultures with Assyrian Trade Colonies, the Early Hittite Kingdom and the Hittite Empire, their stratigraphical positions and main properties.
2) Description of Eastern Anatolian and South Caucasian Middle Bronze Age Cultures with Anatolia and Northern Mesopotamia.
3) Defining Middle Bronze Age Aegean cultures and determining their cultural and trade relations with the Assyrian Trade Colonies.
4) The land and coast trade routes used by the Assyrian trade system, the raw and industrial material brought to Mesopotamia and Anatolia by these routes, and their relations to the Karum system in Anatolia.
5) Cultural interactions and culture transfer of the Middle Bronze Age Cultures within Anatolia, according to archaeological material
6) Cultural and Trade interactions of the Assyrian Trade Colonies with Eastern Anatolia, Caucasia and beyond.
7) Cultural and Trade interactions of the Assyrian Trade Colonies with Western Anatolia, Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Interactions of the Hittite Empire according to historical sıurces and the archaeological proofs.
