Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Explores historical geography of Anatolia in late Antique and early Medieval times.
2) Understands development settlements as de novo and ex novo cities.
3) Recognizes various construction materials and building techniques which archaeologists are exposed to in excavations dated to the late Antique and Byzantine deposits and structures.
4) Examines as case studies of medieval excavations in Anatolia and Near East.
5) Discusses excavations of the Medieval cities both in Anatolia and Near East presented by the students as class assignments.

Course Contents

Approaches to Byzantine Studies; literary texts versus evidence of material culture provided by archeological studies and hands on studies of architecture; Construction techniques and masonry in Roman and Byzantine periods. De novo and exnovo cities of the Early Byzantine periods and their archeological studies: Saraçhane and Great Palace excavations, excavations of the cities of Justiniana Prima and Antioch; Excavations of Anaia, Demre- Aya Nikola, Karacahisar, Amorium, Gemiler Island, and Al- Andarin.
