Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Engineering students will calculate the normal, shear and combined stresses and strains of the bodies subjected to various loading conditions.
2) Calculate basic deformations and relative calculations.
3) Calculate the definitions of the material mechanical properties.
4) Calculate the beam bending and how to draw V and M diagrams.
5) Learn the safety factor and decision criteria.
6) Calculate and use the centroids and moment of inertia and analyze simple indeterminate members by using equilibrium and compatibility equations.
7) Demonstrate skills in problem solving and analytical thinking.
8) Perform the basic engineering systems' analysis and calculations.

Course Contents

This course covers; introduction and basic design concept, definitions, Basic loading types and machine elements,Normal axial loading and normal stress,Normal axial loading and compatibility equations,Stress and strain relations in axial loading conditions,Material mechanical properties, uniaxial tensile testing results, Hooke’s law,Effects of temperature change in stress and deformations Torsion-stress and deformation,Bending, composite beam, unsymmetrical bending, Design of beams for bending, Shear stress in beams, Transformation of stresses, failure theories ,Thin walled pressure vessels,Combined loading and design problems
