1) Identifying the optical properties of rock forming minerals by using microscope
2) Idetifying and classifying magmatic and metamorphic rocks with optical and textural characteristics of minerals
3) Identify crystallographic characteristics of minerals by usıng optical properties.
4) Investigating light behaviours of minerals depending on the properties of internal structure
5) Investigating the polarized light microscope and the behaviour of polarized light in crystalen materials

Course Contents

This course covers optical properties of minerals: elementary concepts of light, polarized light and wave motions, refraction of light, index of refraction, Snell’s law, refractometry of isotropic materials, optical Indicatrix: isotropic and anisotropic media, birefringence, anisotropism and uniaxial indicatrix, interference of light: optical examination of uniaxial crystals and interference figures, biaxial crystals, biaxial indicatrix theory.

Weekly Schedule

1) Introduction; nucleation, growth, and dissolution of minerals
2) Crystallography: external form, internal order and symmetry
3) Crystal chemistry
4) Minerals and their physical properties
5) Optical properties of minerals: elementary concepts of light, polarized light and wave motions
6) Refraction of light, index of refraction, Snell’s Law, refractometry of isotropic materials
7) Optical indicatrix: isotropic and anisotropic minerals
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Birefringence, anisotropism and uniaxial indicatrix
10) Interference of light: optical examination of uniaxial crystals and interference figures
11) Biaxial crystals, biaxial indicatrix theory
12) Optical examination of biaxial crystals : biaxial interference figures, 2V and dispersion
13) Other optical properties of crystals: color, pleochroism, extinction angles, elongation sign
14) Optical properties of Rock-Forming Minerals: quartz, feldspars and feldspatoids
15) Optical properties of Rock-Forming Minerals: olivine-, pyroxene-, amphibole- and mica groups
16) Final examination
