Course Contents

This course covers macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of ophiolitic rocks, structural and geochemical characteristics of different ophiolites, ophiolitic melange concept and suture belts, the ophiolites in Turkey and worldwide.

Weekly Schedule

1) Definitions; lithosphere, oceanic and continental crust, mantle, core etc.
2) Historical development of the ophiolite concept
3) Textural properties (Macroscopic, microscopic) of the ophiolitic rocks
4) Characteristics of MORB type ophiolites
5) Characteristics of the supra-subduction zone (SSZ) type ophiolites
6) Distinctive features of different type of ophiolites, e.g. SSZ tethyan and Cordilleran ophiolites
7) The mélange concept and general characteristics of the mélanges
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Significance of the ophiolite related metamorphic sole rocks
10) Dating of the ophiolitic rocks
11) Emplacement mechanism of ophiolites
12) Some significant ophiolites; Troodos, Hatay, Küre, Hellenide-Dinaride ophiolites etc.
13) General characteristics and development of the Paleotethyan and Neotethyan suture zones in Turkey and surrounding area
14) General characteristics and development of the Paleotethyan and Neotethyan suture zones in Turkey and surrounding area
