Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Makes the examination of emergency or elective surgical patients and differential diagnosis by combining the history, clinical and laboratory findings of patients with radiological findings
2) Puts the indications for surgical treatment in cases where necessary.
3) Recognize and treats breast diseases, and also determines the breast cancer approach algorithm and medical and surgical treatment options.
4) Detects the signs and symptoms of upper and lower gastrointestinal system and knows diagnostic and surgical treatment methods.
5) Detects signs and symptoms of endocrine system and knows diagnosis and surgical treatment methods
6) Recognizes the diagnosis and treatment of acid-base balance and fluid electrolyte deficiencies
7) Detects signs and symptoms of hepatocellular carcinoma and malignant diseases, knows the diagnostic and surgical treatment
8) Performs examinations in ventral, incisional and inguinal hernia and knows the surgical treatment options
9) Knows the approach and treatment algorithms in a patient with a trauma patient and a shock table
10) Observes the endoscopy and ERCP procedures during operation.
11) Observes the operations in the operating room.

Course Contents

Story-telling and basic examination education and practice, theoretical courses, patient-headed education, clinic-pathological meetings and literary hours. Trainees visit General Surgery services by supervised faculty members and their assistants

1) History of Surgery, Benign Breast Diseases and Diagnostic Methods, Abdominal Examination, Abdominal Traumas, Fluid Electrolyte Therapy, Hernias, Hemostasis, Surgical Bleeding, Transfusion, History of Surgical Patients, Surgical Site Infections, Breast Cancer, Surgical Anatomy, Metabolic and Endocrine Response to Trauma, Esophagus Surgical Diseases, Anamnesis
2) Wound Healing and Wound Care, Burns and Frozen, Preoperative Preparation, Postoperative Complications and Management, Intestinal Obstructions, Mesenteric Artery Diseases, Drains, Lower GIS Bleeding, Upper GIS Bleeding, Breast and Axilla Examination, Acid-Base Balance, Surgical Nutrition, Hernia Examination
3) Shock, Fluid – Electrolyte Balance, Head Neck and Thyroid Examination, Benign and Malignant Diseases of the Stomach, Acute Abdominal, Acute Appendicitis and Diverticular Diseases, Morbid Obesity, Benign Thyroid Diseases, Thyroid Cancers, Surgery with Drawings and Photographs, Pancreatic Endocrine Tumors, Adrenal Diseases, Interventional Procedures in the Surgery Service, Liver Tumors, Pancreatitis, Endoscopic Procedures
4) Extra-Hepatic Biliary Tract Diseases, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Surgical Dressing, Anorectal Region Diseases, Colon Benign and Malignant Tumors, Colon Benign and Malignant Tumors, Portal Hypertension, Liver Abscess and Hydatid Cyst, Epicrisis, Patient Observation Forms and Consent, Treatment of Breast Cancers, Parathyroid Diseases, Abdominal Examination, Spleen Diseases, Small Intestine Diseases, Abdominal Examination
