Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) From the Prehistoric period till the end of the Early Christian era, to get to know the areas covering the plastic arts such as painting, sculpture and architecture generally.
2) To know the artist that produces the art work.
3) To be able to know the name of the art work.
4) To know the period of the art work.
5) To know the medium of the art work.
6) To know the date of the art work by century, an exact date for the unique ones.
7) To know the location of an architectural work.
8) To identify the key figures of the art work.
9) To have the knowledge of art history terminology and to perceive the usage of art history terms when looking at an art work.
10) To perceive the influences on the artist.
11) To know the patron of the art work.
12) To decipher the meaning of the symbols of the art work.
13) To have the general knowledge of historical, geographical and sociological structure of the civilization that the art work belongs to.
14) To be able to comment on the plastic values of the art work.
15) To figure out the technique and the style of the art work.
16) To have the knowledge of art culture and a thriving vision. Nurturing from this art culture and vision, to achieve various synthesis and exploit from these when producing an art work.
17) To have the artistic point of view.

Course Contents

Painting, sculpture and architecture of the Prehistoric period, Egypt, Ancient Near East, Aegean, Ancient Greek, Etruscan, Ancient Roman and Early Christian eras.

Weekly Schedule

1) Meeting and brifing on the contents of Art History.
2) Prehistoric Art: Prehistoric background, artistic innovations in Near East and Europe, characteristics of Prehistoric painting, sculpture and architecture.
3) Egyptian Art: Historical background, patronage and artistic life, artistic innovations in Egyptian architecture and characteristics of it in the Old, Middle and New Kingdom.
4) Egyptian Painting and Sculpture: Artistic innovations and characteristics of Egyptian painting and sculpture with major works.
5) Ancient Near Eastern Art: Historical background, patronage and artistic life, innovations in ancient Near Eastern architecture, painting and sculpture. Characteristics of Sumerian, Akkadian and Babylonian art and major works.
6) Ancient Near Eastern Art: Characteristics of Hittite, Assyrian and Persian art and major works.
7) Aegean Art: Historical background, characteristics of Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean Art and major works.
