Course Contents

The course provides the basic concepts of comminication, basic principles of visual comminucation, relation of visual comminucation and semiology. Semiology practice on visual arts, intercultural differences of signs, relation of signifier and signified are also include. Besides, to improve the student’s abilities of visual interpareting, image reading and signification, and creative thinking are the other goals of the course.

Weekly Schedule

1) Communication Theories; definition of communication, different communication models.
2) Personal Communication; personal communication and self-concept.
3) Contact statuses; interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, group communication, public communication, organizational communication and mass communication.
4) Mass Communication and New Technologies; communication experience, feedback, communication ethics and media theories.
5) Verbal and nonverbal communication; definitions and categories.
6) Cultural theories of communication; Culture in social theory, culture as ideology: Dürkheim's theories.
7) Cultural theories of communication; structuralism, semiotic analysis of culture, theories of Claude Levi-Strauss, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Pierre Bourdieu.
8) Midterm
9) The ability to analyze by questioning and thinking critically, to reflect this on their designs, and to offer appropriate solutions to problems
