Course Contents

Westernizing attempts, foundation of Repuclic of Turkey, single-party era and passing through the multi party life, election and military coup eras.

Weekly Schedule

1) Course objectives and content can be shared with students, students' expectations of what the course will be discussed.
2) Modernization and westernization movements in the Ottoman Empire and the Tanzimat and the Edict of Reform issues will be discussed.
3) With the coming to the throne of the Important sultan of the Ottoman Empire II. Abdul Hamid, I. Constitutional and II. Constitutional Monarchy and the political events will be discussed later.
4) The Reasons, leading the Ottoman Empire to the I. World War, will be dealt with in accordance with the developments in the country and around the world.
5) Political developments which occurred after the war and the founding of the Republic of Turkey will be discussed.
6) The establishment of the Republican People's Party and single-party period will be reviewed.
7) The establishment of the Republican People's Party and single-party period will be reviewed.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Transition experiment to multi-party will be examined and with the internal and external reasons of the establishment of the Democratic Party (DP), the transition to multiparty system and political turmoil, arguments will be discussed.
10) Elections and the Democratic Party came to power in 1950 and the DP period will be considered.
11) The Military Coup of May 27, 1960 and aftermath of political and social developments will be reviewed.
12) The Memorandum of March 12, 1971 and mid-term and other political events will be discussed and experienced.
13) The military coup of September 12, 1980 and after social and political events will be reviewed and experienced.
14) The development of Turkish political life after September 12 and the point reached towards 2000s Turkish politics will be examined.
15) Evaluation and discussion about course.
