Course Contents

The content of this course is having knowledge about philosophy. To present the issues and problematics of philosophy. To criticise philosophys connection between other disciplines

Weekly Schedule

1) General information on the course; defining the purposes and curriculum of the class. Definition of philosophy; ordinary knowledge, philosophical knowledge, characteristics of philosophical knowledge and analitical and synthetical functions of philosophy will be explained.
2) General information on the relationship between philosophy and values; axiology; main philosophic disciplines; the relationship of philosophy with science, religion and art will be explained.
3) Epistemology: historical perspective; how to define "epistemology"; main debates on possibilities, sources, means, extent, limitations and criterions of knowledge; relationships of truth-reality and truthness-significancy.
4) Epistemology and logic: Scepticism, source of knowledge (historical perspective); Empiricism; Rationalism; Critical Philosophy; Intuitionism.
5) Reach and Limits of Knowledge: Positivism, Neo-Positivism. Criterions and standards of Knowledge: Pragmatism.
6) Philosophy of Science: what is "science", what are the characteristics of science, classification of sciences, formal science and applied sciences; defining observation, hypothesis and verification; differences between experiment and observation.
7) Scientific explanation; scientific order and natural order; scientific order and social order; Theory; Evaluation of sciences.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Defining "Ethics": the relationship between value and fact; structure of values; value as a will or choice; moral values; morals and ethics; ethics and social sciences.
10) Conditions of moral action; moral conditions, question of "freedom", intentions and means in ethics; classification of ethical theories.
11) Socrates and emergence of ethics; cynicism; Cyrenaics and hedonism; Platon-Aristotales and Eudaimonizm; Kant and philosophy of duty.
12) Philosophy of politics: Main concepts and questions in philosophy of politics; Philosophy of politics and ethics; Philosophy of politics and political science;
13) Philosophy of politics and social sciences; anarchism and necessity for state.
14) States as God's will; Platon and domination of elites; Hobbes and absolute government; Rousseau and democratic totalitarism; Locke and liberal democracy.
15) General assessment on subjects treated during the term.
16) Final examination
