1) Comprehends the histology and biochemistry of orthodontic tooth movement.
2) Knows about the types of tooth movement.
3) Has an opinion about fixed orthodontic appliances and treatment.
4) Knows about impacted teeth and orthodontic treatment alternatives.
5) Knows about congenitally missing tooth and orthodontic treatment alternatives.
6) Being able to diagnose the cleft-palate patients.
7) Has an opinion about medical problems and speech disorders the cleft lip and palate patients face.
8) Has an opinion about the treatment protocols in cleft lip and palate.
9) Has the knowledge about interdisciplinary treatment approaches of cleft lip and palate and can guide the patients to refer to the other services.
10) Knows about the retention period and appliances used for keeping the treatment results stable.
11) May diagnose the patient requiring orthognathic surgery treatment.

Course Contents

Fixed orthodontic treatments, treatments of impacted teeth, treatment alternatives in cases with congenitally missing tooth, cleft of lip & palate and treatment alternatives, retention after treatment, orthognathic surgery and planning, implant applications, 3D modelling, obstructive sleep apnea, complications of orthodontic treatment

Weekly Schedule

1) Histology of orthodontic tooth movement
2) Types of orthodontic tooth movement, anchorage in orthodontics
3) Evaluation of fixed orthodontic appliances, basic fixed treatment techniques
4) The etiology of tooth impaction, orthodontic treatment alternatives, the indications and contraindications of the treatment
5) Congenitally missing tooth, the etiology and incidence, orthodontic treatment alternatives, interdisciplinary approaches – orthodontics and prosthetic dentistry
6) Etiology and embryological development of cleft lip and palate, classification of cleft lip and palate, the distribution and incidence of cleft lip and palate
7) Treatment approach in cleft lip and palate during early period, presurgical orthopaedic treatment and naso-alveolary moulding, treatment approaches in cleft lip and palate at childhood and adulthood, medical problems and speech disorders in cleft lip and palate patients
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Definition and necessity of retention period, several types of retention appliances, the role of periodontal tissues in relapse of orthodontic closure at extraction sites, cases with the need of no retention, limited retention, permanent or semi-permanent retention, the effect of third molars in mandibular stability, the causes of the late mandibular incisor crowding, approaches for preventing rotational relapse, fiberotomy and interproximal stripping
10) Diagnosis for orthognathic surgery, surgical treatment approaches in Class II, Class III and open-bite patients, case presentation
11) Heraditary orthodontic anomalies
12) Obstructive sleep apnea, related orthodontic anomalies
13) 3D imaging and modelling techniques
14) Implant applications with orthodontic treatment, interdisciplinary treatment planning, remodelling of for the so long edentulous areas, bone migration by orthodontic tooth movement
