Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) The student gets the information about the scope, subjects, methodology, main concepts, and sources of the studying area of History of Islamic Sects
2) The student comprehends the nature of madhhab (sects/denominations) in both Islam and other religions
3) The Student has the knowledge of certain factors that are effective in the emergence of theological and political sects in Islam
4) The student learns the formation period, beliefs and ideas, significant followers, literature, territory and contributions to the Islamic thought of the main Islamic theological and political sects throughout the Islamic history
5) The student acquires that sects are social structures that can influence and be influenced, suffer from change and transformation during historical process, and can make connection between them and modern religious movements

Course Contents

The main classical Islamic theological sects: the political, social, cultural background of their emergence, their formation period, beliefs and ideas, significant followers, literature, areas in which they lived, and contributions to the Islamic thought.

Weekly Schedule

1) The subjects, limits, method, problematiques, issues, sources, main concepts of the field of history of Islamic theological sects
2) The notion of "firqa" (sect), the 73-firqa-hadith and its influence on islamic heresiographical writings, the emergence of Islamic political-theological sects in Islamic history
3) The first political-theological firqa in the Muslim World: Khawarij and its survived branch in the present time: Ibadism
4) Murjia
5) Other theological sects such as Jabriyya, Jahmiyya, Qadariyya, Najjariyya, Sifatiyya
6) Mu'tazila: Its Emergence, Characteristic Ideas, Mihna Period, Influences
7) Branches, Main Figures, Works of Mu'tazila
8) Mid-term Exam
9) Ahl al-Sunna: Ashab al-Hadith
10) Ahl al-Sunna: Ash'arism
11) Ahl al-Sunna: Maturidism
