Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Gains the ability to recognise the formation and institutional structures of the schools of Islamic Law in the historical process and to use this information in legal analyses.
2) Understanding Differences between Denominations: Students gain the ability to understand the main differences and interpretations between the different legal sects of Islam.
3) Comparative Analysis Skills: Students develop the ability to make comparative analyses of various sects of Islamic law as well as these systems with the Western legal system.
4) Producing Solutions to Current Problems: They acquire the ability to develop solutions to current and complex issues within the framework of Islamic law.
5) Critical Thinking and Discussion: Students gain the ability to critically evaluate and discuss the theoretical and practical implications of different legal interpretations and practices.
6) Moral and Ethical Evaluation: They comprehend the ethical and moral dimensions of Islamic law and evaluate how these values can be integrated with modern societies.
7) Research and Information Acquisition: They develop the skills of independent research on Islamic law and effective use of relevant information sources.

Course Contents

1.Introduction and Basic Concepts: An overview of the basic principles of Islamic law, its sources and the Islamic understanding of law. 2. Fiqh Sects: The basic teachings and differences of interpretation of the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali sects, as well as other sects such as Jafari. 3. Worship Law: Interdenominational interpretations and practices of worship such as prayer, fasting, pilgrimage and zakat. 4. Family Law: Comparison of the approaches of sects on issues such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and custody. 5. Criminal Law: Differences between sects in criminal law practices such as Hudud, qisas and tazir punishments. 6. Comparative Analysis: Analysing the theoretical and practical consequences of different legal approaches among the sects. 7. Current Issues: How Islamic law is approached by various sects to the problems of the modern world; for example, the effects of banking and finance, human rights, women's rights and technological developments on Islamic law. 8. Comparative Approaches: Comparative analyses between Islamic law and Western legal systems.
