Course Contents

It is the introduction of works of art between the 4th and 15th centuries by revealing the art traditions of the Byzantine Empire, especially Anatolia, in line with historical, geographical, cultural and social inputs. The interpretation of the sacred events and stories mentioned in the Torah and the Bible on different materials such as stone, mineral, wood and ivory, especially visual, miniature and monumental painting, will be discussed in company with visual material, and iconographic analysis and evaluation will be made.

2) Constantine city establishment and information about Early Byzantine period Istanbul panorama, Constantinople walls, history and architecture
3) Mese and Forums, Constantinople Hippodrome, History and Architecture of its historical phases. First Churches in Byzantine architecture: Basilicas. Adaptation of the basilica, the court and meeting structures of the Roman period, to the Christian architecture. Building Materials-techniques.
4) Explanation of church plan type and terminology, comprehension of liturgical spaces and elements in the church with examples Grouping of basilicas according to the cover system Hellenistic basilicas / Italy and Greece examples Vaulted basilicas / Churches of Karaman and Montenegro
5) Domed Basilicas: Emergence, description, architectural features. Constantinople / Istanbul Hagia Sophia Church. Construction phases, plan and decoration features Centrally planned Structures: General information. Classification of structures in terms of plan types and functions.
6) Art and building activities in the iconoclasm period Introduction to the Middle Byzantine period, the description of the Closed Greek cross plan type and its different variations which are characteristic of the period
