Course Contents

Linear power supplies. Operation principles of linear power supplies, block diagram of a linear power supply, the structure of transformation, rectifier and filter layer, regulation and regulators, shunt type regulator with zener diode and transistor, regulators with serial type transistor and with IC circuits, short circuit protection on regulators, voltage and current adjustment on regulators, current regulators, the catalogue specifications of IC regulators. Switch mode power supplies (SMPS). The examination of switch mode power supply types, the operation principles of SMPS, the differences between SMPS and linear power supplies, the types of SMPS and the electrical equations of them, the reason of using ferrite core in SMPS circuits, operation principles of various firm's switch mode regulators, various IC control circuits.

Weekly Schedule

1) Information about course content and resource books. Introduction to power supplies. Block diagram of a typical linear power supply.
2) Transformers. Rectifiers. Voltage-multiplier circuits: Voltage doubler, voltage tripler and quadrupler.
3) General filter considerations: Filter voltage regulation and ripple voltage, voltage regulation, ripple factor of rectified signal. Basic capacitor filter: Output waveform (charge, discharge) times, ripple voltage, DC voltage, filter capacitor ripple, diode conduction period and peak diode current.
4) RC filter: DC operation of RC filter section, AC operation of RC filter section.
5) Discrete voltage regulators: Definition of regulation, zener and thermistor voltage regulators, transistor voltage regulator examples, complete power supply with voltage regulation, current regulator.
6) Series voltage regulation: Series regulator block diagram, basic transistor series regulator, improved series regulator, op-amp series regulator, current-limiting circuit, foldback limiting.
7) Shunt voltage regulation: Block diagram of shunt voltage regulator, basic transistor shunt regulator, improved shunt regulator, shunt voltage regulator using op-amp.

9) IC voltage regulators: Three-terminal voltage regulators (fixed positive voltage regulators, positive voltage regulator specifications, fixed negative voltage regulators, adjustable voltage regulators).
10) Practical power supplies.
11) Block diagram and fundamentals of switching power supplies. Differences between linear and switching power supplies. Energy storage basics (inductor, capacitor).
12) Types of switching regulator. The buck (forward/step-down) regulator. The buck convertor basic circuit. The boost (flyback/step-up) regulator. The boost convertor basic circuit.
13) The buck-boost regulator. The buck-boost convertor basic circuit.
14) The magnetic components within a switching power supply. Switching power supply control integrated circuits.
15) Uninterrupted power supplies (UPS).
16) Final examination
