Petroleum, major processes for refining petroleum. Ways of obtaining petroleum from the ground. Atmospheric and vacuum distillation of crude oil. Name and uses of petroleum products that obtained from refining processes. Thermal and catalytic cracking processes of petroleum. Defining “octane level”. Way of increasing the octane level of benzine. Petrochemical industry, selected types of petrochemical industries, their raw materials, overall operations and final products. Major raw materials used in petrochemical industries. Field visits, conduct field visits to petrochemical industries.

Weekly Schedule

1) Importance of crude oil inTurkey and the world.Geological structure of petroleum location places, theories about the occurrence and formation processes.
2) The search for crude oil, methods of obtaining petroleum from the ground and storage of them.Chemical and physical properties crude oil.Classification of crude oil.
3) The processes of refining petroleum.
4) Laboratory analysis applied to raw materials derived from crude oil.Physical and chemical properties of them.
5) Examining the properties of "benzine" which is the major product derived from petroleum. The most important feature is "Octane Number", to improve the identification and implementation of special procedures should be described.
6) Preperation processes (salt and water separation) applied to the crude oil before going to the atmospheric distillation unit.
7) Introduce operating principles of atmospheric and vacuum distillation units.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Describe the parts of distillation unit, the functions of all units.Operating the whole sytem in the laboratory.
10) Describe the parts of distillation unit, the functions of all units.Operating the whole sytem in the laboratory.
11) Catalytic cracking unit.
12) Reforming unit",platforming", platin is used as catalyst.
13) Isomerization, alkylation, polymerization and sufur separation units.
14) Dangers that may arise in laboratories and industrial production units, cleaning and order of importance.
