Course Contents

Review of basic concepts, review the simple principals of flotation, review the concept of viscosity, explain that viscosity is the internal friction of a fluid, fluid flow characteristics, surface tension and its effects. Level measurement, review the relationship connecting level, height, weight and volume, explain the design and application of dipsticks. Flow measurement, definitions of basic flow measurement. Temperature measurement, review of the temperature definition and the international scale, basic instrument systems, pneumatic transmission. Electrical transmission, maintenance, recording instruments.

Weekly Schedule

1) Information about the content of the lesson. The types of liquid flow. Laminar flow, turbulent flow, Reynold's number.
2) Introduction to viscosity and its unit. Poise, centipoise, micropoise. Viscosity of gases.
3) Samples and calculations.
4) Oswald viscosimeter. Calculating the viscosity of an unknown liquid. Stokes law.
5) Formulas of dynamic viscosity and kinematic viscosity, differences between them, relevant samples and solutions.
6) Calculations regarding viscosity.
7) Surface tension and the tension between the surfaces. Determination of surface tension.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Capillary event. Dependency of surface tension to heat. Steam pressure of a water drop.
10) Surface tension of the solvents. Examples about steam pressure of a water drop and surface active substances and their solutions.
11) Solving examples about surface tension and surface active substances.
12) International unit systems, and turning them into each other. Examples and solutions.
13) Height, weight and volume. The Explanation of the surface measurement as height, weight and volume.
14) Basic flow measurements, measuring rod and function, the weight of a liquid.
15) Definition of heat, measuring heat, thermometer principle, examples and explanation.
16) Final examination
