Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Explain definition, historical development and important of phytotherapy.
2) Define plants that containing alkaloids and glycosides and this effective substance's importance.
3) Compare folk medicine with healing methods and medicinal plants that have been used or being use in folk medicine.
4) Explain the roles of balanced eating and herbal boosters (tea, tincture, oil, etc...) in the prevention or treatment of diseases.
5) Clarify some concepts such as dose, cure etc. and their importance in phototherapy treatments.

Course Contents

The definition and historical development of phytotherapy; active (effective) substance and their effects on metabolism; free radicals (carcinogen) and antioxidants; the concepts of dose and cure, Methods for herbal medicines; plants used in treatment methods and simple applications in phytotherapy; the points to be considered in phytotheapy applications.

1) Definition and history of Phytoterapy
2) Conceps of main active substance and supporting active substance
3) Alkaloids and alkaloid-containing plants
4) Glycosides and glycoside-containing plants
5) Some active substances such as flavone, saponin, bitter substances (amara aromatica, amara tonica etc.)
6) Herbal teas
7) Usage forms of medicinal plants
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Concept of dose and cure in phytotherpy treatments
10) Free radicals and antioksidants
11) Preparation of paste (drug and honey mixture), tincture, syrup
12) Formation of cancer in body and healthy eating
13) Importance of liver for bady
14) Herbal tea treatments (infusyon, maseration, decota)
15) Point to be considered during phytotherapy treatments
16) Final examination
