Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Blends, elements, symbols and formulas, the nomenclature of the compound, the basic laws of chemistry, the mole concept, Avogadro's hypothesis know and explain.
2) Know chemical reactions and makes calculations.
3) Solutions and properties, types of solution, solution concentration, knows the molar concentration of ions and comments.
4) Interprets the concept of pH-pOH.
5) Classify organic compounds.
6) Name and classify hydrocarbons.
7) Name alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids.

Course Contents

Introduction to solution chemistry. Concentration calculations. Law of gases. Acid-base reactions. Solubility calculations. Definiton of organic chemistry, classification of organic compounds, chemical bonds, hybrids, isomerism, functional groups, hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketons, carboxylic acids.

Weekly Schedule

1) Mixtures, physical and chemical properties of the substance, pure substance (compound of elements), the classification of elements, atoms and molecules
2) Symbols and formulas, compounds of formula writing and naming of the basic laws of chemistry
3) Mole concept and Avogadro number, mass percent composition of compounds Avogadro's hypothesis, calculating the atomic mass
4) Chemical reactions and balancing equations, some reaction types of calculations related to the chemical equation
5) Calculations related to the chemical equation is simple and the determination of the molecular formula of the compound, the determination of the compound of formula utilizing chemical equation.
6) Solution and properties, kinds of solutions, solution concentration (weight percent concentration, volume percent concentration, molarity)
7) Solution concentration (the calculation of the molar concentration of ions, normality, molality)
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Ionization of water, pH and pOH concepts andcalculations.
10) Definition of organic chemistry , comparison of inorganic compounds and organic components and chemical bonding (ionic bond, covalent bond, metallic bond, Dipole-Dipole, hydrogen bonding interaction, Wan der Waals bond).
11) Definition of organic chemistry , comparison of inorganic compounds and organic components and chemical bonding (ionic bond, covalent bond, metallic bond, Dipole-Dipole, hydrogen bonding interaction, Wan der Waals bond).
12) Electronegativity, hybrid, isomerism and explanation of the functional groups, and the classification of organic compounds and hydrocarbons
13) Naming of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, physical and chemical properties, chemical reactions
14) Nomenclature of alcohols and aldehydes
15) Nomenclature of ketones and organic acids
16) Final examination
