Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) At the end of the course, students should learn in structural - functional characteristics of biomaterials, concepts of biocompatibility,
2) cytotoxicity and biocompatibility assays, properties, production and uses of biocompatible & biodegradable materials,
3) interaction between biomaterials and cells, developing immune and allergic reactions against biomaterials, interaction between biomaterials and blood, toxicity, prosthesis and implants, tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, standards of biomaterials,
4) test methods, determination of material’s biocompatibility using in vitro and in vivo method, investigation of cell death and apoptosis.

Course Contents

Fundamental structural & functional characteristics of biomaterials, metals, ceramics, polymers, composite materials, bio materials, hydrogels, biodegradable materials, relation between biomaterial and tissue reactions, biocompatibility, interaction between biomaterials and cells, developing immune and allergic reactions against biomaterials, interaction between biomaterials and blood, toxicity, prosthesis and implants, tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, standards of biomaterials, test methods, determination of material’s biocompatibility using in vitro and in vivo method, investigation of cell death and apoptosis.
