Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Have and use theoretical knowledge of the general principles for materials used in the auto bodies
2) Be acquainted with metallurgical properties and transformations in the steels and light metals, transformations in the welding zones of metals, hardness distrubition and preheating or postweld heating effect to welding zones, carbon equivalent formulas
3) Be acquainted with weldability of mild steels, weldability of HSLA steels, weldability of dual phase steels and TRIP steels and some types of stainless steels
4) Have knowledge of weldability of non ferrous metals, polymers and composites both metal and polymer matrix

Course Contents

General principles for materials used in the auto structures. Conventional typse of steels, modern auto body steels such as HSLA steels, DP steels, TRIP steels, and some types of stainless steels. Welded zones of the welded metals (metallurgical transformations in the weld metal and heat affected zone). Weldability of conventional types of steels. Weldability of High Strenght Low Alloy (HSLA) steels. Weldability of coated steels. Weldability of DP and TRIP steels. Weldability of stainless steels. Weldability of non-ferrous metals (aluminium and its alloys, magnesium and its alloys, titanium and its alloys). Weldability of composites both metal and poymer matrix.
