Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) After outlining the principles and theory of Fracture Mechanics, these principles will be utilised to characterise engineering materials
2) Identify and describe the basic fracture and fatigue mechanisms
3) The prevention of failure occurrence and analysis of engineering failures will be detailed,
4) Machine parts and engineering structures will be designed more safely and economically,
5) The effects of cracks and crack-like defects on engineering structures will be outlined,
6) The selection of engineering materials for failure tolerance design is reviewed,
7) Critical crack lengths in engineering structures and fatigue crack propagation speeds will be determined,
8) The fracture and fatigue problems encountered frequently in engineering structures will be understood and failure-free design principles of engineering structures will be given.
