Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Learns the polymers (epoxy resins, polyurethanes, oils, opacities and hardeners) used in the paint industry and their properties.
2) Learns the purpose of using polymers in paint
3) Knows the advantages and disadvantages of using polymers in paint.
4) Polymers used in the cosmetic industry (polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ), polyphenylsilsesquioxane (PPSQ), phenyltrimethicone, C26-28 alkyl dimethicone, starch, chitosan, collagen, poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHA), (Polyhydroxy Butyrate) (PHB), Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)), carbomer polymer and silicone elastomer resin gel) properties.
5) Knows the purpose of using polymers in cosmetics.
6) Knows the cosmetic products using polymer
7) Knows the problems encountered in the use of polymers in paint and cosmetics industries and solution suggestions.

Course Contents

Polymer types and properties. Polymers used in paint and their intended use. Problems and solution suggestions in the use of polymers in paint. Polymers used in cosmetics and their uses. Cosmetic products using polymers. Problems and solutions in the use of polymers in cosmetics.

Weekly Schedule

1) Polymers in general and their use in the paint and cosmetics industries

3) .Vinyl-Acrylic resins and their uses. Thermoplastic and thermosetting vinyl and acrylic resins. Polymerization methods of vinyl and acrylic resins. Curing mechanism of acrylic resins (carboxyl functional acrylic polymers, hydroxyl functional acrylic polymers).
4) Epoxy resins and their uses. Epoxy resins used in surface protection. The curing mechanism of epoxy resins. Raw materials used in epoxy resins (phenol formaldehyde, polyamide, pigments, solvents).
5) Hardeners used in paint and their intended use
6) Types of oil used in paint (Lingrain oil, Chinese oil, Soy flower, Safflower oil, coco oil, tree oil, fish oil, Oitisica oil). Purpose of use of oils in paint and polymerization mechanism. The drying process of oils. Factors affecting the film formation of oils.
7) Unsaturated polyesters and their use in paint. Polycondensation reaction, factors affecting the performance of polyester. Factors retarding the combustion of polyesters. Commercial polyesters. Excipients used with polyester resin.
