Course Contents

The basic concepts of occupational health and safety. The economic dimension of occupational health and safety. The economy of national and international occupational health and safety. Some basic and daily concepts of the economy. The concept of cost, economic and non-economic costs. Visible and invisible costs. Calculation of the costs of work accidents per year according to international standards. The cost of occupational diseases. Examination of international and sectorial dimensions of accidents at work and occupational diseases. Relationship of OHS and business performance. The importance of the budget and its management during the process of occupational health and safety. Cost-benefit analysis. Determination of the need for investment and its financing. Performance measurement. OHS and SMEs. Course of the examination and discussion of international articles.

Weekly Schedule

1) The main concepts and scope of the economy of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). The characteristics of OHS. Resources in OHS. Methods for convincing top management for OHS expenditures.
2) The economic dimension of OHS. The economy as a science. Some concepts about economy. Work accidents and occupational diseases. Revoking right of Social Security Institution of Turkey. Urgency right.
3) The concept of cost. Economic and non-economic costs. Special and social costs. Visible (direct) and invisible (indirect) costs. Perspectives from the firm and society point of view.
4) The benefits of calculating work accidents and occupational diseases. The international methods for calculations.
5) The methods for calculation the costs of work accidents and occupational diseases (continued).
6) Examination of the costs of work accidents and occupational diseases for different countries. Discussion of selected international articles related to this topic.
7) Discussion of selected international articles related to the costs of work accidents and occupational diseases (continued).
8) A closer look at the costs of work accidents and occupational diseases occurring n Turkey. Examples form construction and agricultural industries.
9) The economic dimension of OHS in business level. OHS and firm performance relationship. Measures of performance. A look at the small and medium sized enterprises.
