Course Contents

Internet technologies; developments and the impact on communications, New media and new opportunities, Violates and risks that occured by internet and new media, Dijital gap and dijital divide, Types of cyberbullying and preventive approaches, Surveillance society debate, Hate speech on new media, Internet usage of disadvantageous groups and new media literacy.

Weekly Schedule

1) A general view to the concept of identity
2) Individual and collective identities (gender identity, ethnic identity, cultural identity)
3) Concepts of modernity and national identity
4) Modernism and formation of European identity
5) Modernism and development of European identity (Continuation of the previous lecture)
6) Orientalism, Orientalist discourse, and the construction of the East
7) Identity and otherness; the role of media on the construction of "the other"
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Postmodernism, identities in the postmodern era
10) Gender, the social construction of femininity and masculinity, femininity and masculinity roles
11) Representation of women in the media, news, magazine programs and the representation of women on different areas like politics
12) Masculine and the studies of critical masculinity
13) Representation of masculinity in the media through the concepts such as hegemonic masculinity and power
14) The transformation of national Identities in the process of globalization
15) Discussion of European identity, sub-identity, upper identity through media texts
16) Final examination
