Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) The student gets acquaintance of the science of history of Islamic theological sects in terms its subjects, goals and methodology
2) The student can realize distinctive features of the science of history of Islamic theological sects from other sciences, particularly kalam and history of Islam
3) The student gets knowledge about the main concepts and sources of classical Islamic theological sects
4) The student gains knowledge and opinion about the difference between religion and sect; and about the reasons of sectarian divisions in Islam
5) The student knows about classical Islamic theological sects such as Khawarij, Murji’a, Mu’tazila, Shia and Ahl al-Sunna in general
6) The student examines Khawarij and Murji’a from classical Islamic theological sects in detail

Works introducing the scientific area of the history of Islamic theological sects and the studies on the major Islamic theological sects in the early period

Weekly Schedule

1) Definition of the science of History of Islamic Sects and its analyze in detail
2) Methodology of the science of History of Islamic Sects and its diffences from other sciences, particularly kalam and history of Islam
3) Main referential sources of the science of History of Islamic Sects and relevant sciences
4) The concept of “sect/denomination”, difference between religion-sect, and the history of sectarianism in Islam
5) Reasons of emergence of theological sects in history of Islam
6) A general outlook to main Islamic theological sects I
7) A general outlook to main Islamic theological sects II
8) History of Khawarij and reasons of its emergence
9) Sub-groups of Khawarij
10) Distinctive opinions of Kharijite groups
11) Characteristics of Kharijism
12) Organic and/or intellectual continuum of Kharijism in the present time
13) Reaction to Kharijism: Murji’a
14) History and sectarian identity of Murjia
15) Issue of the continuum of Murji’a
