Course Contents

In this course, formation of national melody and rhythm in the Caucasus region with the societal and cultural developments in the 16th – 17th century will be studied. Under this context, from the traditional musics of Caucasus, Circassians’ national songs and dances, Abkhazians’ national songs and dances, Ossetians’ national songs and dances, Chechens’ national songs and dances, Lezgins’ national songs and dances, Tabasarans’ national songs and dances, Armenians’ national songs and dances, Georgians’ national songs and dances and Azerbaijanians’ national songs and dances will be reviewed. Historical roots of Balkan music, which was determined by, will be investigated. Periods of Balkan Music will be studied, like the period before Christianity, Slavic tradition and elements from Byzantine and Ottoman Empire. The musical instruments like trumpet, accordion, clarinet, guitar, mandolin, gusla and bagpipes which determines the character of Balkan Music will be investigated.
