This course covers, DNA structure and gene expression: building blocks and chemical bonds in DNA, RNA and polypeptides, DNA structure and replication, RNA transcription and gene expression, RNA processing, translation, post-translational modifications and protein structure. Chromosome structure and function: structure and function of chromosomes, mitosis and meiosis, cell cycle, studying human chromosomes, chromosome abnormalities. Cells and development: structure and diversity of cells, cell interactions, the specialization of cells during development, pattern formation in development, morphogenesis, early human development: fertilization to gastrulation, neuronal development, conservation of developmental pathways. Genes in pedigrees and populations: monogenic versus multifactorial inheritance, Mendelian pedigree patterns, complications to the basic Mendelian pedigree patterns, Genetics of multifactorial characters, factor affecting gene frequencies. Amplifying DNA: PCR and cell-based DNA cloning: The importance of DNA cloning, PCR: basic futures and applications, principles of cell-based DNA cloning, cloning systems for amplifying different sized fragments, cloning systems for producing single-stranded and mutagenized DNA, cloning systems designed to Express genes. Nucleic acid hybridization: principles and applications: preparation of nucleic acid probes, principles of nucleic acid hybridization, hybridization assays using cloned target DNA and microarrays, Analyzing DNA and gene structure, variation and expression: sequencing and genotyping DNA, identifying genes in cloned DNA and establishing their structure, studying gene expression.
