Course Contents

Ophiolite concept, origin of ophiolites. Ophiolites in Turkey and worldwide. Geochemical characteristics of ophiolites. Relationships between plate tectonics and ophiolites. Ophiolitic mélange concept. Geological importance of the suture zone. Mineralogical and structural characteristics of Ophiolites. The metamorphic sole rocks at the base of ophiolites and their petrographical, geochemical and geochronological characteristics.

2) Ophiolites in Ocean-Crust transition: From Steinmann Trinity to sea floor spreading. Plate tectonics and ophiolites
3) Mineralogical and structural properties of ophiolites. Importance of sheeted dykes in ophiolites
4) Mid-ocean ridge and the supra subduction proximity in the ophiolites. HOT, LHOT and LOT type ophiolites
5) Petrological properties of MOR type ophiolites
6) Petrological properties of the supra-subduction type ophiolites
7) Geochemical (WR, REE, PGE) properties of peridotites from ophiolites
