1) Understand the history of thought and mindset of Turkey which gives direction to social and political life.

3) Provide students with a critical understanding of what are the obstacles to making meaningful contribution to the deepening and politics of thinking in Turkey by ensuring that they have knowledge of the intellectual origins of the political movements in Turkey.
4) Recognize the intellectual roots of political movements in Turkey.
5) Get an attitute to know the ideological roots of any political movement which is supported or opposed.

Course Contents

In this course, it will be examined in the context of the late Ottoman mentality world and political thought, such as the Tanzimat, Constitutional periods, and the thoughtful sources, ideologies, movements, intellectuals and thinkers of the political currents that emerged in the Republican period Turkey, to include the political thought of the classical Ottoman Empire. In this course, we also will focus on not only the major political thought trends such as islamism and left but also other movements like Anatolianism (Anadolcuk). These movements will be examined not only by their position in the political positions, but also by their original intellectual content and ideological rhetoric. It will also examine political culture, which is influential in the establishment process of modern Turkey / Republic of Turkey, which is the content of the official ideology, or the thought accumulation that determines the official political mentality and the articulation or opposition to official ideology. Political currents and ideologies such as Ottomanism, Islamism, Turkism, Westernism, Liberalism and Socialism and Kemalism, Kemalisms, Turkism, which is the official ideology of the Republican era, Islamicism, Kurdish movement, socialist movements, intellectual roots of left and right political ideologies and movements will be examined in the context of the views of thinkers and intellectuals, taking into account the socio-economic, political and intellectual roots of the period. When this is done, intellectual roots, trends and ideologies will be subject to analysis within the frame of the period. As a working method, the emphasis will be on the reading of the primary sources of political ideologies examined.
