Course Contents

Introduction and an overview of development economics, measuring economic growth and development, historical approaches to economic development and growth, classical and neoclassical theories, structuralist, institutionalist and dependency theories, endogenous growth theory, the market mechanism versus the role of the developmental state in economic development, the industrialization imperative and policies, agricultural transformation and the environment, population growth, migration, human capital and unemployment, international trade, foreign capital investment and the balance of payments problem, international institutional linkages, perspectives for the future.
