Course Contents

This course provides students with the knowledge of metallographic sample preparation in laboratory environment (sample cutting, molding, encoding, grinding, polishing and etcing), recognizing optical (metallurgy) microscope and analyzing microscopic samples, automatically performing some measurements and evaluations by transferring microstructure image to the computer.

Weekly Schedule

1) Teaching working principles of devices used in metallography laboratory.
2) Teaching working principles of devices used in Metallography laboratory.
3) Performing sample getting procedures by cutting steel samples in a various norms.
4) Molding samples with bounded and un-bounded molds.
5) Application of hot and cold molding process, coding of samples.
6) Obtaining a smooth surface by grinding samples with 60, 240, 400, 800, 1200, 2500 numbered FEPA emery
7) Obtaining a smooth surface by grinding samples with 60, 240, 400, 800, 1200, 2500 numbered FEPA emery.
8) Polishing samples by using 6, 3 and 1 µ diamond abrasives polishing felt
9) Obtaining smooth surfaces reflecting light better by polishing samples with 0.3, 0.5, 0.05 µ or Al 2 O 3 or silica abrasives.
10) Preparing etcing reagents and performing etcing process
11) Demonstrating methods of chemical searing on the samples.
12) Examination of polished and etced specimens in metallurgical microscope and saving images
13) Applying measurement and evaluation procedures on the microstructure images by using the image analysis systems.
14) Preparing report for the samples prepared.
15) Performing oral exam to the students about the laboratory studies throughout the semester.
