Course Contents

The process of foreign policy making in the U.S will be taught in detail, knowledge about the foreign policy paradigms of continuity and change will be provided and doctrines of American presidents will be analyzed.

Weekly Schedule

1) The role of the American president in foreign policy making
2) The team of the president in foreign policy making: Vice President, U.S Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense
3) The role of the Executive Office of the President in foreign policy formation: the White House, National Security Council and Central Intelligence Agency
4) The role of public opinion and the media in foreign policy formation
5) The role of interest groups in foreign policy formation
6) Lobbying activities and in particular role of the Armenian, Greek and Cypriot Greek lobbies in American foreign policy making
7) General Review
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) The role of the Congress in foreign policy making
10) Presidential doctrines: Truman Doctrine and Monroe Doctrine
11) Nixon and Eisenhower Doctrines
12) Bush and Obama Doctrines
13) The paradigms of change in American foreign policy
