Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Be able to differentiate the social, political and cultural qualities of the period.At the end of this course the student will be able to evaluate his/her previous knowledge of drama comparing it with that of Shakespearean period drama ,and he will be able to develop a different viewpoint.He/she will have a thorough knowledge about the life and work of Shakespeare.He will anayse the social, cultural,religious and political structures in the plays of Shakespeare.He/she looks at life experiences from an aesthetic viewpoint.He /she develops philosophical and ideological viewpoints.

Course Contents

The course provides information on the social, political and cultural aspects of the Elizabethan time: The readings and the analysis of some of Shakespeare's plays; The study on Globe Theatre; The knowledge of literary genres coming into being at that time

1) The Elizabethan period, the influences of Renaissance and Humanism on this period of Elizabethan literary world, the political, cultural and economic impacts which were influential on the literature of the period, the Elizabethan theatre, the impact of the special shape of the theatre on the plays written in that period, the contemporaries of Shakespeare, prose writers, playwrights, the interest of Queen Elizabeth and James I into the plays, the patronage of the artists, Shakespeare's life, his works, and writing style.
