Amaç İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı lisans ve yüksek lisans programları Batı, özellikle İngiliz kültürüne özgü edebiyat, tarih, felsefe, din, sanat, siyaset ve toplumsal yaşamı incelemek için tasarlanmıştır. Dersler öğrencileri yalnızca köklü edebi ve kültürel gelenekler hakkında değil, aynı zamanda çağdaş popüler kültür ve eleştirel teori alanlarında da bilgi sağlamaya yönelik multidisipliner çalışmaya yönlendirmeyi amaçlamaktır. Ayrıca öğrenciler okuma, dinleme, yazma ve konuşma becerilerini ilerletmek için uygun hale getirilmiş dersler alarak İngilizce yeterliliklerini geliştirme fırsatı bulacakları Hazırlık Programı’na tabi tutulmaktadırlar. Bölümümüze kayıt yaptıran bütün öğrenciler Hazırlık Programı Muafiyet Sınavı’na girmek zorundadırlar. Both undergraduate and graduate programmes in English Language and Literature are designed to study literature, history, philosophy, religion, arts, politics and social life pertaining to British Culture in particular and Western world at large. The courses aim at enabling students to engage in multi-disciplinary study by providing input in fields such as established literary and cultural traditions, contemporary and popular culture, and critical theory. The department also offers a Preparatory programme in English to the students so that they can improve their competency in English by taking courses that are tailored to improve their skills like reading, listening, writing and speaking. All students to be admitted into the department are required to take a proficiency or exemption test in English. The graduates of the department find employment opportunities as instructors of English, translators and civil servants as well as in sectors including finance, advertisement, mass media and tourism.
Misyon Bölümün amacı öğrencilere dört temel edebi türe ait edebi ve eleştirel metinleri inceleyip araştırabilecekleri donanıma kavuşturmak ve buna ek olarak, inceledikleri metinlerin sosyal bağlamı, tarihsel, kültürel ve felsefi ardalanını araştırmalarını ve bunun esere yansıyış şeklini ele almalarını sağlamaktır. Edebi ve kültürel bağlam dışında, bölümün diğer bir misyonu da öğrencilere dilbilim ve çeviri alanlarında da İngilizce’nin inceliklerini öğreterek kendilerini bu alanlarda geliştirmelerini teşvik etmektir. The principal aim of the department is to enable students to have the opportunity to study and analyse various literary and critical pieces by taking courses in four major literary genres. In addition to carrying out generic analysis, students are also encouraged to examine the social context and to trace the historical, cultural and philosophical background reflected in the works. Apart from literature and culture courses, the department also offers courses in linguistics and translation studies to increase students’ language competency and awareness. In order to improve their research and academic writing skills, the students are to take rhetorics and research techniques.
Vizyon Türkiye’nin Avrupa Birliği’ne girme kararlılığının ortaya çıkışı ile, İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı öğretimi ve uluslar arası ilişkiler konularına ve aynı zamanda eleştirel eserler üretmeye duyulan ilgi artmıştır. With the advent of Turkey’s determination to join European Union, the interest in teaching English language and literature, engaging in international affairs and carrying out editorial work has grown. The Department of Western Languages and Literatures intends to form a cultural bridge between European Union and Turkey through its well-trained students, all qualified with the required language and communicative skills as well as the capacity to ease Turkey’s adaptation process.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Lateral or vertical transfer student admission is carried out basing on the "The Transfer Regulations for Associate and Undergraduate Degrees, Double Majors, Sub-specialties and Credit Transfer Regulations among Institutions". The prior learning of transfer students is recognized as per the relevant regulations of Council of Higher Education and under the coordination of the Adaptation Committee.

Kocaeli University guarantees in advance that all credits gained and courses received by an Erasmus student after the mobility abroad will be fully recognized and transferred into Kocaeli University system and upon arrival with the approval of the authorities and the student. While preparing the" Erasmus Credit Transfer and Grade Equivalency Table" the ECTS grades are transmitted to Kocaeli University grading system.

Turkish higher education institutions are in the start-up phase about the recognition of non-formal and informal education. However; computer and foreign language skills that students improve on their own, are evaluated through exemption examinations by the university. Students who prove to be proficient in such exams are exempted from related course(s).

  • Acquires the knowledge and competence to translate texts from various fields from English and other languages to Turkish, and from Turkish to English and other languages.
  • Acquires professional ethics and responsibility consciousness by identifying and developing solutions to problems encountered in areas related to their professions.
  • Gains interdisciplinary knowledge and perspective, synthesizing the outcomes arising from the relationship of language and literature studies with different disciplines.
  • Produces projects and applies the acquired knowledge by working harmoniously individually and in groups.
  • Contributes to society with knowledge, experience, and thought by having knowledge and understanding of the environment, race, gender, religion, economy, politics, etc., within the literary culture.
  • Acquires the ability to perform cultural criticism by analyzing the social and political contexts of literary works.
  • Discusses the views on the evolution and use of language by applying linguistic theories.
  • Uses digital technologies in areas related to literature analysis, translation applications, etc.
  • Develops writing skills to produce scientific, fictional, and non-fictional works.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Examination, assessment and grading procedure is mainly based on Kocaeli University Education and Training Regulations for Associate and Undergraduate Degrees Depending on the nature of the course various instruments such as midterms, final exams, short exams, presentations, assignments, projects, portfolios and applications may be involved in the assessment process of a semester on condition that students are informed about their weights upon registry. Contribution of these activities to final grading range between 30% -70% and So as to be eligible to take the final exam, a student has to fulfill the attendance requirement of 70% for theoretical and 80 % for practical courses. Once this requirement is fulfilled, attendance is not required again in case of a failure and retaking that course. Final grading of a course is determined on the basis of semester studies and final exam. Those with certified and officially approved excuses are also given a makeup exam.
