Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Explore phases of building activities of mankind starting as of epi-paleolithic to the transition period from Late Bronze to the Iron Age.
2) Recognize construction materials evidenced at archaeological excavations.
3) Grasp development of various plan types of structures.
4) Examine development of constructing techniques of sub-basement in Çayönü settlement.
5) Distinguish differences between settlement plans which are based on sociological structure, economic activities such as, production and trade, as well as differences that occur due to military strategies.

Course Contents

Paleolithic period caves of Anatolia transformed into prehistoric settlements, such as Yarımburgaz and Karain cave; Round houses and temples: architecture evidenced at the excavations of Nevala Çori and Göbeklitepe; Transition of house plan from round to rectangular form and evolution phases of foundation/sub-basement in Çayönü; Architecture and settlement plans observed at the Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age settlements of Anatolia, as well as architecture of the Mesopotamian cultures, such as Ubaid, Halaf and Sumer are explained. Architecture at the Mediterranean basin is introduced, such as Egypian, Minoan and Hittite architecture.
