Course Contents

This course will focus on the production, evolution and function of coins: we will analyse their development, spread, signs and symbols, monetary and ideological value, iconographic characteristics, mint and their production techniques. The time-span will stretch from the introduction of coins through to the end of the Byzantine period.

Weekly Schedule

1) Historical background-introduction
2) Numismatic terminology; forms of currency and trade prior to the invention of coins; the invention of coins.
3) The emergence and development of the money economy. The first coins. The Kingdom of Lydia, Ionian cities, mainland Greece.
4) Greek coin units and models of weight. Origins and regional variations of the coin in the Archaic era.
5) Coins in the Classical Period. Coins in the Persian Empire.
6) Coins of the Kingdom of Macedonia. Royal coins from the Hellenistic era. Coins from the Seleucid and Ptolemaic kingdoms.
7) The first Roman coins. Roman Republican coins.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Coin-units in the Roman Republic and Empire. Political motifs on coins.
10) Roman city coins
11) Important coin-types from the Julio-Claudian and Flavian dynasties. Coins of the Antonine and Severan dynasties.
12) Important coin-types from the Julio-Claudian and Flavian dynasties. Coins of the Antonine and Severan dynasties.
13) Circulation. The crisis of the 3rd century AD. Late Roman coins. Mints.
14) Identification, classification and documentation of coins.
15) Final exam
16) Final examination
