Course Contents

This course covers physical and index properties of soil types, classifications, compaction, hydraulic properties, capillarity, permeability, thawing effect, effective, neutral and total stresses, stress-deformation relationship of soils, stress distribution, consolidation.

Weekly Schedule

1) Introduction: soil-rock descriptions and important reminders
2) Soil desciption: weight-volume ratios (phase diagram)
3) Soil grain distrubution analysis, consistency limits
4) Soil classification (USCS and AASHTO)
5) Soil water relationship and one dimesional water flow
6) Stresses in soil (total, efective and pore pressures)
7) Stresses due to external loads
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Two dimensional flow in soils and flow nets
10) Flow net construction rules, properties and usage
11) Consolidation of soils, total compaction
12) Consolidation of soils: time dependent change of compaction
13) Settlement calculations due to consolidation
14) Compaction of soils
15) Closure: review of important issues
16) Final examination
