Course Contents

This course covers stress-deformation relationship of soils, shear resistance, soil pressures, earth pressures, retaining wall design, slope stability.

Weekly Schedule

1) Intro: main issues, stresses in soils and Mohr circles review
2) Mohr-Coulomb yield criteria and shear strength parameters
3) Determination of shear strength of soils in lab
4) Shear strength parameters with Triaxial testing
5) Earth pressure theories
6) Earth pressures in cohesive soils
7) Effect of external loading on earth pressures
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Retaining wall types
10) Principles of design of rigid retaining walls
11) Principles of design of flexible retaining walls
12) Calculation of bearing capacity of retaining wall foundations
13) Calculation in slope stability and infinite slope problems
14) Slope stability analysis - Modified Bishop Method
15) Closure: review of important issues
16) Final examination
