Course Contents

General principles. Introduction to water resources and equilibrium of river channels, Dams, Reservoirs, Diversion weirs and gates, Intake structures, Energy dissipaters. Hydroelectric power, Irrigation and Drainage, Flood control, River regulation analysis in water resources Water consumption. Water resources and design. Water transmission and system design. Drinking water depots and design. Dams: General definition and classifications. Hydrostatic forces. Earthquake forces on the body and the water. Concrete gravity dams. Planning and design criteria, statical analysis, factor of safety, production principles. Concrete and arch dams: General principles, types of arches, structural analysis and design criteria. Earth dams. Seepage and the shearing stresses at the body and on the base. Fresh water distribution and network of pipes design. Environmental health facilities. Wastewater and drainage water remove and design.

Weekly Schedule

1) Planning and design of the dam reservoirs, reservoir equation, yield capacity-risk relationships
2) Operation of the hopper, volume, surface curves, determination of reservoir capacity, tank semi-selection
3) Water supply: water demand determination, water supply and transmission, transmission line design
4) Determination of water tank capacity, analysis of the water distribution network
5) Waste water systems, discrete and composite systems, storm water discharge, system planning and design of circular cross-section, and accounting principles
6) Dams: general definitions and classifications, hydrostatic forces, the body and the body of water seismic forces
7) Dams: general definitions and classifications, hydrostatic forces, the body and the body of water seismic forces
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Concrete gravity dams: planning and design principles, static analysis, and manufacture of safety factor
10) Buttress dams: planning, design and manufacturing principles
11) Concrete arch dams: general principles, belt types, static analysis, and design principles, and manufacture of the concrete body volume
12) Soil and rock-fill dams: planning the design, the body and the base leakage, fill the bottom shear stresses in the body
13) Hydroelectric power plants, hydroelectric power generation, installed capacity load factors
14) Turbines: balance shaft, losses, penstock and galleries
15) Water drainage systems, bottom outlet, dams project risk, economic analysis and project economics
16) Final examination
