Soil Mechanics I

Course Contents

This course covers purpose and content of soil investigations, soil borings and sampling, lab works and lab safety, water content, unit weight measurements, specific gravity measurements, field measurement of unit weight, Atterberg limits (liquid, plastic and shrinkage limits) determination, grain size distribution by sieve and hyrometer analysis, soil classification systems, permeability measurements by constant head and falling head tests, consolidation test, unconfined compression test, Triaxial compression tests, California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests, standart and modified compaction tests.

Weekly Schedule

1) Purpose of soil investigations and tasks during investigations, tests condusted in Laboratory and safety in the lab
2) Excavation, boring and sampling in field, water content and unit weight determination tests in lab
3) Specific gravity test
4) Unit weight test in field
5) Liquid limit, plastic limit and shrinkage limit tests
6) Grain size distribution analysis (sieve and hydrometer tests)

8) Midterm examination/Assessment
