Course Contents

This course covers;electrical properties of the geological rocks, origin and creation of the self potential (SP) in the ground, measurement techniques of SP data, data corrections, calculating a theoretical anomalies due to simple shaped bodies. Interpretations methods of anomalies, resistivity methods, electrode arrays, apparent resistivity transform function. Interpretation of vertical electrical sounding and two dimensional resistivity profiles, the origin, measurement techniques, data process, interpretation, removing a noises and masking effects from data in induced polarization (IP) method.

Weekly Schedule

1) Basic physical concepts (Ampere, Volt, Resistance, Ohm’s law, Kirchoff’s law, electrical conductivity and the types of electrical conductivity)
2) The origin of self-potential
3) Self-potential method, the field equipment of SP, the types of data acquisition methods
4) Mapping of SP anomaly and interpretation (Nomogram methods)
5) The properties of rocks, the concept of resistivity and apparent resistivity
6) Derivation of apparent resistivity, geometric factor, field applications and the system of electrode arrays
7) Detection and delineation of lateral and vertical variations
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Interpretation of Sclumberger soundings by two-layer master curves
10) Interpretation of Sclumberger soundings by a computer program
11) Multi-electrode resistivity systems
12) The origin of induced polarization (IP) method
13) Field application of IP method, measurement of time, frequency, and phase angle
14) The use of IP application in mining exploration
15) Natural IP effects, IP noise, and negative IP
16) Final examination
