Amaç Bölümümüzün amacı, fizik, matematik, jeoloji ve tektonik bilgisini, gelişmiş cihazlar kullanarak alınan ölçülerle birleştirerek; yerin fiziksel ve kimyasal yapısını, ekonomik madenlerin yerlerini, zemin özelliklerini, depremlerin oluşum mekanizmalarını belirleyebilecek bilgi donanımına sahip, nitelikli ve aranan mühendisler yetiştirmektir. Misyon Bölümümüzün temel görevi evrensel boyutlarda bilgi üretmek ve paylaşmaktır. Temel yöntemlerin yanı sıra, sürekli gelişen teknolojinin Jeofizik Mühendisliği’ne sunduğu yeni yöntem ve cihazları eğitim politikasına dahil ederek, öğrencilerine uygulamalı jeofizik, sismoloji ve tektonik dahil olmak üzere, kaynak araştırmalarını içeren jeofizik konularını öğretmek. Bunun alt yapısı için gerekli olan matematik, fizik ve temel jeoloji bilgilerini vermek ve öğrencilerine devlet ve özel sektörde profesyonel kariyer yapmaya hazırlamak. Uygulamalı Jeofizik yöntemleriyle, yeryuvarının fiziksel alanlarındaki değişimlerin ölçülmesi, bu ölçü değerlerinin işlenmesi, yorumlanması ile maden, petrol, doğalgaz, yer altı suyu, arkeolojik kalıntıların yerlerinin belirlenmesi konularına hakim mühendisler yetiştirmek. Ayrıca; ekonomik minerallerin bulmasının yanı sıra yol, bina, baraj, tünel gibi yapılar için temel araştırmaları yapabilecek biçimde mühendislik konularını öğretmek Depremlerin oluşumu, etkileri ve sonuçları konusunda yeterli bilgi birikimine sahip afet yönetimi, coğrafi bilgi sistemleri, uydu verilerini kullanabilme olgunluğa erişmiş, donanımlı, katılımcı, özgürce araştıran, sorgulayan, ekip çalışması yapabilen, sözlü yazılı iletişim kurabilen toplumsal sorunlara duyarlı, mesleki etiğe saygılı, çağdaş mühendisler yetiştirmektir. The aim of our department is to generate and share knowledge at the global scale. A part of our mission is to educate and teach students geophysics such as fundamental geophysical methods, applied geophysics, seismology, tectonic etc. and updating curriculum time to time according to the new technology and if it is necessary, the new tecnology is included into the curriculum. Giving requisite classes e.g mathematics, physics, geology etc. to the students in order to understand the geophysics classes mentioned above is also a part of our mission. We eduate students for ready to work at the government institute or some private sectors. Students learn how to carry out applied geophysical methods in the field to detect the anomaly which might be related to mining, oil and gases, fresh water, archaelogical ruins etc. The students learn also how to apply some basic signal processing methods and to interprete the data. Besides, finding some economic minerals, teaching geophysical engineering related to road, building, dam, tunnel; educating students about earthquake in all respects, teaching them on disaster management are also a part of our mission. Students learn to use GIS and satellite data. Students improve their abilities about working with a team and excellent verbal comminication with teammates, express themself easily both written and oral. We educate students who respect the ethics about engineering, sensitive to environment and cultural morals.

The vision of our department is to educate individuaIs who will earn a Bacholar of Science, a Master of Science, and a Philosopy of Doctorate degrees in geophysical engineer. We would like to teach them in all respects of geophysics such as data acquisition, modeling and interpretation. Reaching international and national at the level of excellence, becoming one of the best and well known, well-qualified department on education and research and at the top level in our country about earthquake study are our vision as a department.

Students who get the required score from relevant test type in the central university placement test conducted by OSYM ( Student Selection and Placement Center) can register to the programme. Lateral transfer student of an equivalent program is also possible in case a quota is provided by the university. Graduates of associate degree programs of relevant field of study are also admitted to the program for their further studies on condition that they get the required score from Vertical Transfer Examination conducted by OSYM ( Student Selection and Placement Center). International and exchange student admission is also possible within bilateral agreements.

In order to be granted a bachelor’s degree from the program, a student must be successful in all the courses listed in the schedule and fulfill a workload of 240 ECTS in total, and have minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 out of 4.00.

The program aims to train qualified Geophysical Engineers by providing them with theoretical and applied courses on Seismology, Applied Geophysics and Earth Physics.
Genel Bilgi Jeofizik Mühendisliği Bölümü, 1979 yılında Kocaeli Devlet Mühendislik Mimarlık Akademisi (DMMA), Temel Bilimler Fakültesi içerisinde kurulmuştur. İlk öğrencilerini 1980 yılında almaya başlamış, 1982’de Yıldız Üniversitesi Kocaeli Mühendislik Fakültesine bağlanmıştır. İlk mezunlarını 1984 yılında vermiştir. Diğer bölümler gibi Jeofizik Bölümü’nün de hızlı gelişimi 1992 yılında Kocaeli Üniversitesi’nin kuruluşu ile olmuştur. Genel Bilgi

The department of geophysical engineering was founded in 1979 under the Kocaeli State architecture-engineering academy. Education started in 1980 in our department. In 1982, the department joined the engineering faculty of Yıldız University. The first student group graduated from the department in 1984. With the establishment of Kocaeli University in 1992, the department became a part of the engineering faculty.

Upon a successful completion of the programme, graduates can continue their academic studies at master’s and then doctorate programs on condition that they get the required score from related test parts of ALES (Examination for Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education) and on condition that they certify their foreign language proficiency through central examinations such as TOEFL,YDS,etc.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Lateral or vertical transfer student admission is carried out basing on the "The Transfer Regulations for Associate and Undergraduate Degrees, Double Majors, Sub-specialties and Credit Transfer Regulations among Institutions". The prior learning of transfer students is recognized as per the relevant regulations of Council of Higher Education and under the coordination of the Adaptation Committee.

Kocaeli University guarantees in advance that all credits gained and courses received by an Erasmus student after the mobility abroad will be fully recognized and transferred into Kocaeli University system and upon arrival with the approval of the authorities and the student. While preparing the" Erasmus Credit Transfer and Grade Equivalency Table" the ECTS grades are transmitted to Kocaeli University grading system.

Turkish higher education institutions are in the start-up phase about the recognition of non-formal and informal education. However; computer and foreign language skills that students improve on their own, are evaluated through exemption examinations by the university. Students who prove to be proficient in such exams are exempted from related course(s).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Examination, assessment and grading procedure is mainly based on Kocaeli University Education and Training Regulations for Associate and Undergraduate Degrees Depending on the nature of the course various instruments such as midterms, final exams, short exams, presentations, assignments, projects, portfolios and applications may be involved in the assessment process of a semester on condition that students are informed about their weights upon registry. Contribution of these activities to final grading range between 30% -70% and So as to be eligible to take the final exam, a student has to fulfill the attendance requirement of 70% for theoretical and 80 % for practical courses. Once this requirement is fulfilled, attendance is not required again in case of a failure and retaking that course. Final grading of a course is determined on the basis of semester studies and final exam. Those with certified and officially approved excuses are also given a makeup exam.
