Course Contents

This course covers; overview of modern manufacturing technology; introduction to manufacturing processes, inspection methods and quality; materials and their manufacturing characteristics; description of various conventional and applications in industry: casting, metal forming, forging, extrusion, rolling, joining and welding, EDM, ECM, laser machining, abrasive flow processes; machining processes: turning, milling, drilling, broaching etc., abrasive machining processes. Lab demonstrations and plant tours.

Weekly Schedule

1) Material selection and manufacturing process.
2) Fundamentals of casting and casting methods.
3) Fundamentals of metal forming
4) Bulk forming processes: rolling, forging, extrusion.
5) Sheet metal forming processes: bending, drawing and stretching.
6) Fundamentals of machining. Metal removal and mechanical forces. Chip formation. Parameters. Cutting tool materials and cutting fluids.
7) Turning basics. Lathe design and components.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Fundamentals of the milling operation. Milling machines.
10) Abrasive Machining Processes: Grinding and grinding machines, honing, lapping and free abrasives.
11) Rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing.
12) Joining process fundamentals. Adhesives. Welding types. weldability.
13) Arc welding, oxy-acetylene welding. Welding equipment.
14) Non-traditional methods of manufacture.
15) Microelectronics manufacturing and electronics assembly.
16) Final examination
