Course Contents

Description, Structure of plastics (chemical, physical structures, reinforced plastics, plastic foams). The production of plastic materials. Thermoplastics. Thermosets. Elastomers. Deformation of the Mechanical Properties of Plastics. Creep and Fracture properties of Polymer Materials

Weekly Schedule

1) Introduction to plastics; Definitions of plastics, History of plastics, Raw material supply, strategic materials, plastics industry, use of plastics in modern society,
2) Polymeric materials: Fundamentals of matter, bonding, formation of polymers, thermoplastics, thermosets, copolymers
3) Structural properties of plastics: morphology, thermal behavior, molecular weight, melt index, shape effects
4) Mechanical properties: Elastic behavior, viscous flow, viscoelastic materials, Plastic stress- strain behavior, Creep, toughness and Impact strength, reinforcements, Fillers, Toughness modifiers.
5) Chemical and physical properties: Environmental resistance and weathering, chemical resistivity and solubility, permeability, electrical properties, optical properties, flammability, plastic identification
6) Thermoplastic materials- Commodity Plastics: Introduction, general properties, Polyethylene, Polyethylene Copolymers, Polypropylene
7) Thermoplastic materials- Commodity Plastics ;Polyvinyl Chloride, Polystyrene, Alloys and blends

9) Thermo Plastic Materials-Engineering Plastics: Introduction, general properties, polyamides or Nylons, Thermoplastic Polyesters.
10) Thermo Plastic Materials-Engineering Plastics: Polycarbonate, Acrylics, Fluoropolymers, High Performance Plastics, Cellulosics
11) Thermoset Materials: Crosslinking, Thermoset types, general properties and uses, Phenolics, Aminoplastics,
12) Thermoset Materials: Polyester thermosets, Epoxies, Thermoset polyimides, Polyurethanes
13) Elastomeric Materials (Rubber): Introduction, Aliphatic Thermoset elastomers, thermoplastic elastomers, Fluoro elastomers, Silicones
14) Polymeric Composite Materials: Matrix materials, Reinforcements
15) Environmental Aspects of Plastics: Source reduction, Recycling of plastics, Regeneration, Degradation, Landfills, Incineration, Total product life cycle, future
