Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) The student gets aware of what kind of need the science of Kalam emerged and realizes its methodological quality different from other sciences.
2) The student learns the issues of the science of Kalam in its systematic way.
3) The student knows about different ideas and views on the issues of Kalam with an awareness of a dialectical relationship behind them.
4) The student gains knowledge about the background of the views on the issues of Kalam and the difference between them.
5) The student acquires the ability to make suggestions in analyzing of the background of the different views

Course Contents

Main issues of the science of Kalam, various and different ideas and discussions, the fundamentals of the credal principles, suggestions on the multi-facet reasons of the differences.

Weekly Schedule

1) The definiton, subjects, importance, value, process of formation of the science of Kalam. First conflicts in the Muslim society, first kalam schools
2) The stages of the science of Kalam throughout its history, main figures and works. Judgments and the nature of judgments in related to Kalam, variety of proofs, the sources of knowledge according to Kalam
3) The nature of belief (iman), issues related to belief, the definition and nature of belief and the relationship between belief and acts.
4) Taqlidi-tahqiqi iman, increase or decrease in belief, difference between iman and islam, kufr-shirk, irtidad-nifaq, the issue of kabira, takfir
5) Belief in Allah: Various acception of God in various religions and thoughts, the possibility of proving God and the suggested proofs.
6) The name of “Allah”, Allah’s beautiful names and attributes, and the views and groups on the issue of Allah’s attributes.
7) Other issues related to God: Husn-Qubh, the situation and position of ahl al-fatrat and the parents of the Prophet, salah-aslah, taklif, ajal, rizq, istitaat etc.

9) Free will and predestination
10) Belief in the prophethood: the judgment on sending prophets, essential qualities of prophets, the prophets mentioned in the Qur’an, the hierarcy of prophets
11) Miracles and other extraordinary occasions, the issue of Mahdi-Masih, imama
12) Belief in the holy books
13) Belief in angels
14) Belief in the hereafter and doomsday
15) Stages of the hereafter, life in the grave, shafa’a
16) Final exam
